A Color Story

—A Beautiful Mess

Working with a small team of designers who were disillusioned with the infinite number of photo-editing apps, we wanted to give people a product with real depth and utility. We worked directly with A Beautiful Mess to create every asset, from the logo, to the interface, to the iconography and filters. The result: A Color Story, an app that brings robust features, akin to that of Adobe Photoshop. We designed a system to apply filters, save and automate editing steps, and curve tools for adjusting contrast and levels. This put the power right into the hands of you, the photographer.

One of the biggest challenges was finding the right look. It had to be simple, elegant and—ultimately—iconic. I went through about a hundred logo ideas and app icons, finally landing on a logo inspired by kaleidescopes and color wheels. While the team and I initially toyed around with a color scheme throughout the app, we ended up shifting towards much more suppressed accents of colors. After all, once the app is the hands of the user, it's their color story—not the designers.

When A Color Story was ready to launch, I also designed a landing page for promotions, using photography that A Beautiful Mess often used in their beautiful blog posts.
